Sokol Books Ltd. Canon Triangulorum Logarithmicus, Das ist: Künstliche Logaritmische Tafeln der Sinuum, Tangentium, und Secantium.
Augsburg, durch Andream Aperger, 1631.
First edition of this very rare set of convenient, pocket-sized logarithmic tables by the Dutch publisher of mathematical tables Adriaan Vlacq (1600-67), applying the logarithmic tables published in his Arithmetica logarithmica of 1628, which had extended the English mathematician Henry Briggs's (1561-1630) tables of 1624 to include numbers 1 to 100,000 to 10 decimal places, to trigonometrical functions. It contains tables of logarithmic sines, tangents and secants. The geometrical diagram at the end is entitled 'Mysterium Astronomicum'. It was published with (but evidently also issued separately from) Johann Faulhaber's Ingenieurs-Schul of 1630, since the errata for that work appear at the end of this vol.
The thick vellum slightly patterned in the manner of pigskin suggests a Central or Eastern European binding, possibly Bohemia-Moravia, or more likely Poland-Lithuania. Unfortunately we have not succeeded in identifying the arms or monogram.
OCLC notes Columbia, Yale and Wisconsin only in the US.
